Extension of the Münster-Mitte Comprehensive School |

The site of the old Paul-Gerhardt-Realschule, which gives more rooms to the comprehensive school every year, and the Überwasserschule, previously used by the adult education centre, is very small. The task here was to accommodate a two-sport hall, a combination of refectory and forum as well as rooms for the upper school. The building project will be realised in 2 construction phases. The clinker facade of the new building will have aquaterra clinkers, which correspond with the buildings in the neighbourhood.

“The task for the architects was demanding,” explained Jörg A. Michel from the Office of Real Estate Management. The site of the old Paul-Gerhardt-Realschule, which gives more rooms to the comprehensive school every year, and the Überwasserschule, previously used by the adult education centre, is very small. The task here was to accommodate a two-sport hall, a combination of refectory and forum as well as rooms for the upper school. Both the 1910 building of the Überwasserschule and the Paul-Gerhardt-Schule from the 1950s are listed buildings. The school is located in the historic old town, close to the Überwasser Church and the cathedral. 470 participants applied to take part in the architectural competition organised by the city. 20 of them, including the winning team from Münster, bleckmann+krys architekten, were selected by lot to participate in the competition.

1st construction phase
The refectory will be built onto the southern end of the Paul-Gerhardt-Realschule, which will also be used as a forum. This will leave the school with a garden area to the west of the building. In addition to 250 dining places, the future refectory will also have 400 seats for special events. The neighbouring existing buildings of the Paul-Gerhardt-Schule, which is being phased out, and the Überwasserschule are being renovated at the same time. The new entrance portal of the listed Überwasserschule will be completed next.
The clinker facade of the new building on Jüdefelderstrasse has already been freed from scaffolding. The exterior façade of the new building will be clad with aquaterra clinker bricks, which correspond with the buildings in the neighbourhood.

2nd construction phase
The sports hall and the rooms for the upper school are to be built as a complex on the northern end of the schoolyard, where there is now a small playground. The rooms for the upper school will be built around the gymnasium and on its roof. Everything together should be ready by the 2018/19 school year at the latest, when the first comprehensive school students will enter the eleventh grade.
