Review ABC Architects' Day 2009

Presentation: Max Dudler / Max Dudler Architekten AG

Max Dudler was born in Altenrhein in Switzerland. He studied architecture at the Städelschule in Frankfurt/Main and at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. He is the founder and director of the architecture firm of the same name, which was founded in 1992 and has offices in Berlin, Zurich, Frankfurt and Munich. In the course of the two decades of its existence, the office's focus has expanded beyond classical architectural tasks. In ever-changing contexts, Max Dudler has meanwhile transferred his conceptual approach to urban planning, traffic engineering, conversions, monument conservation tasks and exhibitions, right through to furniture designs. Numerous awards, including the DAM Prize for Architecture in Germany 2012 for the work on Hambach Castle and the Nike for the best urban interpretation in 2010 for the Jacob-and-Wilhelm Grimm Centre, are a response to a constant, persistent preoccupation with architecture. In 2004 Max Dudler was an appointed professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.

Only the aging capacity of the buildings gives the city the opportunity to create new traditions. The age is guaranteed by the workmanlike design and the right choice of facade materials, and only this type of design allows the viewer not only to enjoy the long-distance effect of a building, but also to feel comfortable when viewing it from close up. The office's projects are characterised by the careful selection of materials, their treatment - partly with old craft techniques - and their composition, as well as by careful detailing.
